Historical timeline

Opened in 1931, the Empire State Building has a long and storied history in New York. This feat of Art Deco architecture has been the focus of the skyline for over eighty years. It was originally designed to be a landing platform for blimps and later it became a popular tourist destination with the opening of the observation decks. In 2010, the entire building underwent a renovation to make it more environmentally friendly.

  • What movies have featured the Empire State Building?

Both King Kong films from 1933 and 2005 are the most memorable movies featuring the iconic landmark. The skyscraper has also been seen in Elf, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, and Sleepless in Seattle with the dramatic ending in the lobby and observatory.
  • What do the colors signify?

On many days throughout the year, the massive lights on the tower of the Empire State Building turn a different color in honor of a special occasion. For example, the building will be lit in a brilliant red, white, and blue scheme for July 4th or an emerald green for St. Patrick’s Day. Check out the full lighting schedule on the website. http://www.esbnyc.com/current_events_tower_lights.asp
